Matching hay to different species

Choosing the right hay for the animals you have can help maintain condition, support production and improve their health throughout the year.

Horses generally do well on quality grass hay such as oaten or clover. Lucerne hay can benefit growing horses, broodmares and performance horses that need additional protein and energy. Cattle are able to utilize a wider range of hay types thanks to their rumen. Higher quality hay may be needed for growing stock, lactating cows and animals needing extra condition. Good quality grass hay is suitable for most sheep, while pregnant and lactating ewes often benefit from higher quality feed during periods of increased nutritional demand.

Whatever species you're feeding, hay should be clean, fresh-smelling, free from mould and stored correctly to maintain quality. Not sure which hay best suits your animals? Our team can help you choose the right option.
