Drench resistance

Internal parasites can have a significant impact on livestock health and productivity, but using the same drench too often can lead to drench resistance. This means some worms survive treatment, pass on resistant genes, and over time the drench becomes less effective. Rather than only drenching on a routine schedule, consider using worm egg counts to determine whether treatment is actually needed. This helps reduce unnecessary drenching, slows the development of resistance and can save you money.

Other ways to help manage drench resistance include:

  • Rotate drench groups each time

  • Dose animals accurately based on weight

  • Follow label directions carefully

  • Practice good paddock management to reduce parasite burdens.
