Rain scald in horses
With colder weather many horses are now rugged, however it's important to remember that rain scald can still develop even under waterproof rugs around this area.
Moisture, sweat and humidity trapped beneath rugs can create the perfect environment for skin irritation and bacterial growth, particularly along the back and rump. Regularly removing rugs to check skin condition can help catch issues early before painful scabs and hair loss develop. Ensuring rugs fit correctly, remain waterproof and allowing horses time without rugs when conditions permit can all help reduce the risk of rain scald through winter.
We stock Debrisol spray in store, which is useful for cleaning any mildly affected areas, as well as Yellow Lotion which can protect those areas after cleaning. If the area becomes painful, swollen or doesn’t improve veterinary advice is recommended.
